Interview Follow-Up

Following up after the Interview

After leaving the interview, take a few moments to write down key issues that were raised during the interview, such as specific qualifications for the position, your strengths in meeting those needs, areas of concern, and how to address them, etc.

Then, drive directly to the dmDickason office so that you can personally meet with your Recruiter. Follow-up (and timing) at this stage is critical.

If you are interested in the position, you must immediately acknowledge the interview with a brief business letter. Here are a few suggestions that you will want to keep in mind…………

  1. Type up a follow-up letter (preferably on your own personal stationary) taking care to set the letter up business correct; check for proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. Never use your current company’s stationary, envelopes, postage meter, or fax machine when sending a personal note. This is not only unprofessional, it is stealing!

  2. Be sure to use some of these words (or similar ones) to bring your letter alive:

      1. a.   Enthusiastic. If you are, say so. There is nothing so contagious as this word. Let the employer catch a little excitement about you, from you.

        b.   Impressed. Let the employer know of your highly favorable impression of his/her product, service, facility, employees, etc. A discussion of one, maybe two of these things is enough.

        c.   Confidence. The employer has a need, or he/she would not be talking to you. Let him/her know that you are confident that you can excel at this job (but only if you think this).

        d.   Interest. If you want to be considered, let them know it! They are buying and you are selling……ask for the sale!

        e.   Appreciation. Last of all, express appreciation for the time he/she spent with you.

    • It is important that you carefully make note of the names and titles of all the people that interviewed you. Also make sure that you have the correct name and address of the company (Ask the Interviewer for his/her business card).

    • We highly suggest that one paragraph of your letter be used to reinforce a particular point of challenge discussed in the interview; one which was of obvious concern of importance to the interviewer.

    • Your letter should be addressed directly to the person who will make the final hiring decision. A copy can also be mailed to the other people you may have talked to, along with a brief hand-written note of thanks for their time and interest. Make sure that your dmDickason recruiter also receives a copy. It is recommended that you allow us to quickly review it before you mail it. We have seen hundreds of these letters and can spot a common mistake immediately.

    • Finally, if for some reason you are not interested in the job, a brief note to this effect should also be forwarded. This is professional.
