Resigning Your Current Position, Professionally
Congratulations! You have landed the job! Now you are faced with the delicate challenge of resigning from your current employer without burning bridges and saying good-buy to friends and colleagues.
Your dmDickason Recruiter will help you draft a resignation letter. (See sample below). Then, you will make an appointment with your manager to respectfully explain your decision. Your manager needs to hear that your decision is firm and final and that you are now committed to your new employer. Express appreciation for the opportunities that your former employer has given you, and assure him / her that you will continue to work hard during the two-week resignation / transition period.
Be careful not to get lured into any discussions other than your resignation. Instead, discuss how your former employer wants to handle your final two weeks, or the transition of your current responsibilities or projects to others.

Sample Resignation Letter
Mr. / Mrs. / Ms. _____________________
City, State, Zip code
Dear Mr. / Mrs. / Ms. ______________:
Please accept this letter as two weeks formal notice of my resignation from ________________.
My final day of employment will be month, day, year.
I have enjoyed my association with name of former company. Your management, direction, guidance and assistance have been sources of personal and career satisfaction, and I am grateful. I am particularly appreciative of ____________________________________________.
However, I have given this decision a great deal of thought, and request that my final decision be respected. Since I have made a formal and written commitment to my new employer, your considerations in not embarrassing either one of us with further discussions of my departure and/or new career opportunity would be appreciated.
Once again, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your organization, and, if there is anything that I can do to help you with my transition, please do not hesitate to ask.
Very truly yours,
